Inservice training is a popular, convenient and economical way to train your staff. I recently delivered the first of two Inservice training sessions to the Physical Therapy department at a local hospital in Ottawa.

I covered two topics with the team:

  1. Agility balance training
  2. Nordic Walking

I try to make my inservice training sessions educational, economical and fun. Physical Therapists not only get a chance to expand their skills, this is a great team building experience for the group.

Inservice Format

Whenever I do exercises I pair people up and give each person a chance to act as the Physical Therapist and the other as the client. This is a great learning experience by itself. I make sure I am readily available to coach the pairs as they move through the stations.

I also make a point of constantly mixing up the pairs. The Therapists get a chance to work with each of the members of the Department and learn their individual styles.

I kept the team busy the whole time we were together. The combination of the agility drills and the nordic walking challenged the team members and caused some muscles to be sore the following day! At the same time, the team walked away appreciating some of the challenges their clients face.

Wide Range of Inservice Training Modules

Here is how I approach structuring Inservice training for a specific department/clinic: I offer a wide range of topics (Training Modules) to the Practice Leader (or Clinic Director) before we start. I encourage the Leader/Director to share the possible topics with their team so that they can jointly create an agenda.

The Training Modules include:

  • Tai Chi
  • Yoga
  • Nordic Walking
  • Osteoporosis Treatment and Management
  • Gym Ball Exercises
  • Core Strength Training for Rehab to Elite
  • Top Strength Exercises from Rehab to Elite
  • Agility Drills that Improve Balance
  • Geriatric Assessments

I make sure that the content includes a combination of theory and practical application. The mix between theory and practical depends on the topic and the personal choice of the team.
