Make Your Lat Pull Downs Safer

in Osteoporosis Exercises

The Lat pull down can be an effective weight training exercise for osteoporosis. However, It requires careful attention and modification to ensure that it is safe for people with osteoporosis. In the following video, Margaret Martin, a Physical Therapist, presents safe versions of the wide grip and reverse grip lat pull downs and how to modify the lat pull down so it is a safe exercise for osteoporosis.

I encourage you to incorporate the lat pull into your weight training osteoporosis program. However, pay attention to how you execute the lat pulldown. Avoid pulling the bar behind your neck and you will enjoy many years of safe bone building. To learn more about a comprehensive exercise program for osteoporosis, I encourage you to consider my MelioGuide Exercise for Better Bones program.

Margaret , thanks for these very helpful and descriptive videos. I have your book and I treat it as my bible. I am now back to the gym after a one year hiatus and with your exercise program and your book I can now confidently do my exercises and know that I am doing myself no harm. Because of a severely degenerative knee due to injury and surgery that was done in 1950s ( I am reluctant to have the knee replacement surgery) I still find it a challenge to get my heart rate up and lunges seem to painful for me. But I do your program 3X a week.

    Thanks for everything,
    Ruth

    Hi Ruth,
You are very welcome. I am glad you find the videos helpful. Comments like yours make my work even more meaningful.
I know you live across town but there are several excellent therapists in Kanata who have taken my training and could provide you with suggestions to help your knee pain – you can find their names under the Products and Services, click on find a professional. My suggestions until you see one of them is to not do your lunges if they increase your knee pain. You can consider biking, swimming or water running for your aerobic fitness – not as bone loading but wonderful for your cardio. Take care,
    Margaret
